Bassist Steve Holy is a musician whose experience, deep sound and supportive groove have made him in demand on the Vancouver scene for many projects. For this performance Steve’s group will explore compositions by Charles Mingus, John Coltrane and Duke Ellington to create music that will be familiar to jazz fans yet uniquely personal and contemporary. Don’t miss this swingin’ adventure! With Mike Allen-saxophones, Rod Murray-trombone and Dave Robbins-drums.
In keeping with Legacy Jazz Series Society’s philosophy of creating opportunity and exposure for gifted younger musicians, trumpeter Thad Bailey-Mai will be joining the Steve Holy Quartet as a special guest during the show. Thad is a recent graduate of Capilano University’s respected Jazz Studies program and is quickly emerging as a strong voice on the Vancouver scene.
LJSS is also very pleased to be presenting an exhibition by photographer-Lisa Nixon.
Artist Statement by Lisa Nixon:
I feel at home when I am behind a camera. I have learned that my camera is an extension of me – it is able to see things that I don’t, and when I press the shutter release, it evokes emotions that I wouldn’t have felt otherwise. To be able to tell a story, or replicate a feeling through photography is something I feel privileged to share.
Throughout my journey, I have learned that you can never take anything in nature for granted. I am inspired by nature’s beauty and I love documenting the ever-changing landscape. What is here today may be gone tomorrow. Climb the mountain, traverse the waters, smell the rain, feel the sun on your face, have the wind blow through your hair, and just be. www.lisanixon.ca
